Artist Statement

“An artist is not paid for his labor but for his vision.” - James McNeill Whistler

The focus of my work is much like the quote above. Money is not the key to an artist’s success but rather his or her ability to put their imagination on paper. I enjoy working in grey scale, but color is a favorite of mine as well. When working in grey scale, I enjoy playing with light and dark tones created by the shadows especially in my portraiture work. I also enjoy the bright colors in nature and like photographing landscapes. Many of my works have a nature based, organic feel. This includes my ceramic work as many of my pieces are very abstract and nonrepresentasional. I play with many concepts of art including: line, shape, color, and texture. I enjoy creating pieces that have visual flow and make the viewers eye move in a specific or certain direction. An example of this would be my “Row of Palms” photo shown in the photos below. My work is concrete and strong as each piece stands out for itself, however, a major concern of mine is my overall style and flow of theme. I have yet to pin point a particular style for my work as each piece is very different in nature. This makes for a very unique Behance page. In time I do trust that my style will become more consistent and unified. However, if I pushed my art to become more uniform than is it really my unique style or me trying to be something I’m not?
Photography
Chair, 2023, photography

This photo was taken in the style of Irving Penn. It is a beautiful black and white full body self portrait that I took in our photo lab at NPC. I really enjoy the light and dark tones in this photo especially the shadows in my face. My face features become very defined. It was also very fun dressing up for this photo shoot!
Curious Flower Pt. 1, 2023, photography

This photo is very curious in nature as it requires a certain eye to create the depth of field necessary for this shot. I had to consider myself, the flowers, and the glass container, all as separate objects. This allowed for several layers to the photos giving it an interesting view. I enjoy the color palette in this photo as well.
Curious Flower Pt. 2, 2023, photography

Curious flower part two was taken at the same time as part one. The angles are different yet striking. My facial features gives this photo a very mysterious. The fact that the viewer can only see one of my eyes also adds to this mysterious feel.
Roots, 2022, photography

This is a very interest shot because the roots of the tree that are normally underground are on top of the ground and the rim of the water. The way this inlet is structured roots were able to grow to the visible eye making for a killer shot. The opposing colors in this photo are also very interesting with harsh brown roots and pale bluish-green waters. Lastly, the textures of this photo are more than striking and leads the views eye from the top of the tree to the focal point of the roots at the bottom.
Sailboat in Your Window, 2021, photography

In my Sailboat in Your Window photography, I was in Italy having a blast and took many photo. However, this one was my favorite. I edited the colors in the photo, so that the blues would become brighter and reds in the boat and roof tops would stand out significantly.
Foot Steps, 2022, photography

I enjoy this photography because it is very relaxing. I love being at the beach. I was in Aruba when I took this piece. The colors in this photo are bright and bold. This photo also plays with line as it has a horizon line and sailboats across it. Along with color and line, the foot prints in the sand add a very curious texture.
Nightlight, 2023, photography

Nightlight I took one night with my friends when we built a campfire. The fire was glorious. The light and dark values in the piece stand out significantly. The abstract shape of the fire gives it a very interesting look. The longs are arranged in a very weird way that makes texture stand out as well.
Row of Palms, 2023, photography

Row of Palms plays with line, texture, and color. The viewers eye follows the left bottom palm up to the right top palm creating a sense of visual rhythm and line. The texture in the tree trunk and leave also add interesting key points to this photos. I am happy that I put this photo in grey scale. This makes the other elements of art stand out more versus the vivid bright color of the sky and dark palm trees.
Rock Meets Water, 2023, photography

Rock Meets Water photo is a favorite of mine because of its asymmetrical feel and look. The clear fluid water meeting the hard dark rock is a juxtaposition that make me laugh at times. The different values of light and dark tones stand out significantly. This photo was striking in color, but I believe it can be appreciated more in grey scale.
Product Photography for Supherb Ceramics, 2023, photography

In my product photography I was able to shoot some of my merchandise I have for my small business, Supherb Ceramics. This was very fun as I changed positions of the items many times! Creating the perfect product shot is very important so that the viewer will want to buy whatever is in the photo. I hope to use these photo on my website for the Supherb Ceramics website.
