MARTIAN CHRISTMAS
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Martian Christmas is a professional and published project about a couple living on Mars. The book is one out of five books in the children’s book series. Once all five books are finished, my client and I will work on the Martian series novel to complete the entire series.
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
Narrative Strategies
For this project, I created the illustrations only. I worked closely with the author to fully realize her words in a visual format.
Target Audience
The target audience for this project is children in grade school. My client wanted to depict what the future may look like and how travel to Mars to a real possibility in the future.
Rough Narrative
Headed course for Mars, two couples anxiously wait for their arrival on the distant planet. The couples arrive and create their homestead. After many years had past, the couple had two children of their own who then had their children creating a human settlement on the planet Mars.

Typography
The typeface was largely picked by my dear friend Chrystal Tapp, the author. However, I was asked for my opinion and I thought the Frensya regular font was appropriate for a children's book because it was both fun and legible.
Color Palette
The author and my client for the book wanted to color palette to depict a Christmas-time feel, but also not be too overpowering. The pale mint green color lightens up the book to make it fun and lighthearted. The red gives the book the Christmas time vibes.

Design Decisions
The author of Martian Christmas allowed my imagination to run wild with my approach to creating the illustrations. I chose to work with watercolor because I knew that it would dry quickly. I could also print my sketches onto watercolor paper so that I would not have to recreate the entire work. Once each work dried, I scanned it into my computer so that I could edit the artwork in Illustrator to refine it further. This also allowed me to duplicate some of the sketches so that two or three works could be created from one sketch.
